"The Castlerosse Hotel a link with the past"

This 40 page pictorial history was written by the Castlerosse Hotel proprietor Mr. Con Horgan, with the assistance of local Kerry historians, and builds on the hotel’s direct links with the Earls of Kenmare and their great Killarney demesne on which the hotel is built. It traces the history of the Browne family later Viscounts Castlerosse and Earls of Kenmare, the first of whom Valentine Browne was appointed Surveyor General of Ireland by Queen Elizabeth I, and arrived in Killarney in 1587.

The Castlerosse Hotel was built by Beatrice Grosvenor in 1960 on the site of the Royal Victoria Hotel which during the 19th century and up to World War 1 played host to Princes, Dukes and Earls including King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra on their visit to Killarney in 1885. Beatrice Grosvenor was the last of the Browne family to live in Killarney. Lady Grosvenor died in 1985 and the hotel was acquired by its present owner.
